Ananda Yoga

Ananda Yoga: Yoga for Self-Realization

Ananda Yoga is a style of Hatha yoga developed by Swami Kriyananda, a direct disciple of the great yoga master Paramhansa Yogananda. It is a classical and spiritual approach to yoga, with a strong emphasis on inner awareness and the subtle flow of energy.

Core Philosophy

The central goal of Ananda Yoga is Self-realization. It uses the physical postures (asanas) as tools to raise consciousness and prepare the body for deeper meditation. The philosophy is based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi.

What Makes Ananda Yoga Unique?

  • Energization Exercises: Developed by Yogananda, this series of 39 exercises is a core part of the practice. It involves tensing and relaxing different body parts to consciously draw prana (life force) into the body from the cosmos, helping to purify and control the body's energy.
  • Affirmations: Every asana is paired with a specific, silent affirmation. For example, in Tree Pose (Vrikshasana), the affirmation is "I am calm, I am poised." This practice helps to focus the mind and attune it to the specific spiritual quality of the posture.
  • Gentle and Inward-focused: Ananda Yoga is not about achieving extreme physical feats. The emphasis is on safety, relaxation, and using the poses to experience a deeper inner state. The practice is gentle, encouraging students to move from a place of calmness.
  • Preparation for Meditation: The entire practice—the Energization Exercises, asanas, and pranayama—is designed to calm the body and mind, making it a perfect preparation for deep meditation.
