Anusara Yoga
Anusara Yoga: Flowing with Grace
Anusara Yoga is a modern school of Hatha yoga founded by John Friend in 1997. The name "Anusara" means "flowing with Grace." It is a heart-oriented, spiritually inspiring, and alignment-focused practice.
The Three A's
- Attitude: The practice begins from the heart, with an intention to connect with the divine.
- Alignment: A sophisticated system of alignment principles known as the Universal Principles of Alignment™ (UPAs) are used.
- Action: The physical performance of the pose, arising from the right attitude and alignment.
What to Expect in a Class
- Heart-Oriented Theme: The teacher will introduce a heart-centered theme for the class.
- Vinyasa Flow with Pauses: A mix of flowing sequences and holding poses to explore alignment.
- Precise Alignment Cues: Expect detailed instructions based on the UPAs.
Key Poses
- Heart-opening backbends like Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana) and Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana).
- Standing poses like the Warrior series, with a focus on expressing the heart's qualities.
- Poses are chosen to reflect the specific theme of the class.
