Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga: The Art of Active Relaxation
Restorative Yoga is a practice of deep, conscious relaxation. It is a gentle, therapeutic style of yoga that uses props to support the body completely, allowing it to open, release tension, and heal with no effort.
Core Philosophy
Restorative Yoga is designed to shift the body into "rest and digest" mode (the parasympathetic nervous system), where healing, rejuvenation, and cellular repair can occur. By supporting the body with props, we remove the need for any muscular effort, signaling to the nervous system that it is completely safe to let go.
What to Expect in a Class
- Extensive Use of Props: Expect to be surrounded by a nest of blankets and bolsters.
- Very Long Holds: Poses are held for a very long time, typically from five to twenty minutes.
- No Stretching Sensation: Unlike Yin Yoga, the goal is to feel no stretching sensation at all. The aim is 100% comfort and support.
- Focus on Being, Not Doing: Your only job is to be still, breathe, and allow yourself to be supported.
