Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga: The Quiet Practice

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced, meditative style of yoga where poses are held for long periods of time—typically three to five minutes or longer per pose. It is a passive practice that targets the deep connective tissues of the body (ligaments, bones, joints) rather than the muscles.

Core Philosophy

Yin Yoga is the perfect complement to more muscular (yang) styles of yoga. To access the deep "yin" tissues, the muscles must be relaxed. Holding poses for a long time gently applies stress to these tissues, which over time makes them longer and stronger. Energetically, it aims to open the body's meridian system (from Traditional Chinese Medicine).

What to Expect in a Class

  • Long, Passive Holds: You will hold each pose for several minutes, surrendering into the pose with your breath.
  • Use of Props: Props like bolsters, blankets, and blocks are used extensively to support the body.
  • Cool Room: Practiced in a cool room to ensure the stretch bypasses the warm, elastic muscles.
  • Meditative Atmosphere: The long holds create a quiet, contemplative space.
