Cat Pose
marjaryasana
About the Pose
Marjaryasana, or Cat Pose, is typically paired with Bitilasana (Cow Pose) in a gentle, flowing sequence. By rounding the spine towards the ceiling, this pose provides a wonderful stretch for the back, neck, and shoulders. It helps to release tension and improve spinal flexibility.
How to Practice
- Start on your hands and knees in Tabletop position, with wrists under shoulders and knees under hips.
- On an exhale, press into your hands and round your spine towards the ceiling.
- Tuck your chin towards your chest and release your neck completely.
- Imagine you are pulling your navel in towards your spine to fully engage your core and deepen the stretch.
- On an inhale, move into Cow Pose.
Purpose & Benefits
- Stretches the Spine: Creates space between the vertebrae and stretches the muscles of the back and neck.
- Massages Organs: The contraction of the abdomen gently massages the digestive organs.
- Calms the Mind: The rhythmic movement, when paired with Cow Pose, can be very meditative and calming.
- Improves Posture: Increases awareness of the spine and helps to relieve tension from sitting.
