About the Pose

Arguably the most important and most difficult pose in yoga, Savasana is the final posture of conscious rest. By lying still on the back and systematically relaxing every part of the body, you allow the nervous system to reset and the benefits of the physical practice to be integrated. It is a practice of complete surrender.

How to Practice

  1. Lie down flat on your back.
  2. Let your feet fall open naturally, about as wide as your mat.
  3. Allow your arms to rest alongside your body, a little way away from your torso, with your palms facing up.
  4. Tuck your shoulder blades slightly underneath you to open your chest.
  5. Close your eyes and let your breath be natural.
  6. Consciously release any remaining tension in your body, from your toes to your face.
  7. Remain still for at least 5-10 minutes.

Purpose & Benefits

  • Deep Relaxation: Calms the brain and relieves stress, anxiety, and mild depression.
  • Reduces Fatigue: Helps to relieve physical and mental fatigue.
  • Lowers Blood Pressure: The state of deep rest can help to lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate.
  • Integrates the Practice: Allows the body and mind to absorb the benefits of the asana practice that came before it.
