About the Pose

Fish Pose is a supported backbend that arches the chest and opens the throat. Traditionally, the crown of the head rests on the floor, and the body is supported by the forearms. It is an excellent counter-pose to shoulder-opening postures like Shoulder Stand.

How to Practice

  1. Lie on your back with legs extended. Place your hands, palms down, underneath your hips/buttocks for support.
  2. Press into your elbows and forearms to lift your chest towards the ceiling, creating an arch in your back.
  3. Gently release the crown of your head back to the floor. Most of your weight should be in your arms, not your head.

Purpose & Benefits

  • Stretches the Front of the Body: Opens the chest, throat, and abdomen.
  • Strengthens Upper Back: Strengthens the muscles of the upper back and neck.
  • Improves Posture: Counteracts rounded shoulders.
  • Stimulates Thyroid: The throat stretch is believed to stimulate the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
