Mantra Yoga
Mantra Yoga: The Path of Sacred Sound
Mantra Yoga, also known as Japa Yoga, is the spiritual path that uses sacred sounds, words, and phrases to focus the mind, alter consciousness, and invoke divine energy. A mantra is literally a "tool for the mind."
Core Philosophy
The core principle of Mantra Yoga is that sound is a fundamental form of energy and vibration (Shabda Brahman). By repeating a mantra, a practitioner can tune their own consciousness to the specific divine frequency represented by that mantra.
The Practice of Japa
The practice of mantra repetition is called Japa. It can be performed in several ways:
- Vaikhari (Audible): Chanting out loud.
- Upamshu (Whispering): Repeating in a low whisper.
- Manasika (Mental): Repeating silently in the mind.
Practitioners often use a mala (a string of 108 beads) to keep count. The most well-known mantra is OM (AUM), the sound of creation.
Key Poses
- As with other meditative paths, the primary pose is a comfortable seated posture (like Easy Pose (Sukhasana) or Lotus Pose (Padmasana)) that allows for extended periods of chanting or silent Japa.
- The practice is mental and vibrational, not physical.
