Nath (Gorakhnath) Yoga
Nath (Gorakhnath) Yoga: The Primordial Tradition
Nath Yoga represents one of the oldest and most influential traditions of Hatha Yoga, systematized by the great mahayogi Gorakhnath. It is a lineage of masters (Naths) who have preserved and passed down esoteric yogic practices for centuries.
Core Philosophy
The Nath tradition views the body as a microcosm of the universe. The central aim is kaya siddhi (perfection or immortality of the body), not for its own sake, but to create a stable, incorruptible vessel capable of holding the highest states of consciousness (samadhi). It is a tantric system that works with the subtle energies of the body, particularly the union of the solar (Pingala) and lunar (Ida) energy channels to awaken the central channel (Sushumna) and raise the Kundalini energy.
The Practice
Nath Yoga is less of a "studio style" and more of a complete spiritual path (sadhana). Its techniques laid the foundation for much of what we know as Hatha Yoga today.
- Asana: Focuses on a smaller number of foundational poses held for long durations to stabilize the body and energy.
- Pranayama: Advanced breath control techniques are central to manipulating prana (life force).
- Mudra & Bandha: Sophisticated energy locks and seals are used to direct prana and awaken Kundalini.
- Dhyana (Meditation): The ultimate goal is to still the fluctuations of the mind and merge with the absolute consciousness (Shiva).
- Internal Alchemy: The practice involves transmuting physical and mental energies into spiritual energy.
Legacy
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, one of the most important classical texts on Hatha Yoga, was heavily influenced by the Nath tradition. When you practice many foundational yoga techniques, you are touching upon the legacy of these ancient masters.
