About the Pose
A deep, heart-opening backbend performed from a kneeling position. Camel Pose stretches the entire front of the body while strengthening the back. It is an energizing pose that can combat fatigue and mild depression.
How to Practice
- Kneel on the mat with your knees hip-width apart. Press your shins and the tops of your feet into the floor.
- Place your hands on your lower back, fingers pointing down, as if putting them in back pockets.
- Inhale and lift your chest, lengthening your spine. Engage your core to support your lower back.
- On an exhale, begin to arch your back, keeping your hips pressed forward over your knees.
- You can keep your hands on your back or, if accessible, reach back to hold your heels. Let your head drop back if it feels comfortable for your neck.
