Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga: The Eight-Limbed Path in Motion
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic, physically demanding style of yoga that was developed by K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. It involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive and continuous series of postures—a process that produces intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat.
The Series
Ashtanga is taught in a specific, fixed sequence of poses. Students must master each pose in the sequence before being given the next one by their teacher.
- The Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa): This means "Yoga Therapy." It is designed to detoxify and realign the body.
- The Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana): This means "Nerve Cleansing." It opens and purifies the subtle energy channels.
- The Advanced Series (Sthira Bhaga): Four series of advanced postures that demand extreme strength and flexibility.
What to Expect in a Class
- Mysore Style: The traditional way to learn Ashtanga. Students move through the sequence at their own pace, with the teacher providing individual adjustments.
- Led Class: The teacher calls out the poses and breaths, and the entire class moves through the sequence together.
Key Poses
- Sun Salutation A and B (Surya Namaskar)
- The standing sequence, including poses like Warrior I, Warrior II, and Triangle.
- The Primary Series includes a host of seated forward bends and hip openers, like Marichyasana A-D and Boat Pose (Navasana).
