About the Pose

Pigeon Pose is a deep hip-opening posture that stretches the outer hip of the front leg and the hip flexor of the back leg. It is often practiced in a forward-fold variation for a more restorative release.

How to Practice

  1. From Downward-Facing Dog, bring your right knee forward towards your right wrist.
  2. Angle your right shin so your right foot is somewhere in front of your left hip. Keep your front foot flexed.
  3. Extend your left leg straight back behind you.
  4. Ensure your hips are level. You can place a block or blanket under your right hip for support.
  5. Stay upright, or walk your hands forward to fold over your front leg.

Purpose & Benefits

  • Deep Hip Stretch: A powerful stretch for the piriformis, glutes, and outer hip.
  • Stretches Psoas: Lengthens the hip flexor of the extended back leg.
  • Relieves Sciatic Pain: Can help to alleviate pain from sciatica by stretching the piriformis muscle.
