About the Pose
Pigeon Pose is a deep hip-opening posture that stretches the outer hip of the front leg and the hip flexor of the back leg. It is often practiced in a forward-fold variation for a more restorative release.
How to Practice
- From Downward-Facing Dog, bring your right knee forward towards your right wrist.
- Angle your right shin so your right foot is somewhere in front of your left hip. Keep your front foot flexed.
- Extend your left leg straight back behind you.
- Ensure your hips are level. You can place a block or blanket under your right hip for support.
- Stay upright, or walk your hands forward to fold over your front leg.
Purpose & Benefits
- Deep Hip Stretch: A powerful stretch for the piriformis, glutes, and outer hip.
- Stretches Psoas: Lengthens the hip flexor of the extended back leg.
- Relieves Sciatic Pain: Can help to alleviate pain from sciatica by stretching the piriformis muscle.
